How To Control Those Pesky Cravings!

Let’s talk about cravings for a little bit, shall we?

I don't know about you, but throughout the progress of my health goals and health journey, whether my goal was weight loss, to have more energy, to get in better shape, or to tone up…

There was always one thing that seemed to creep in that was just pesky and hard to manage throughout whatever my goal was in my journey.

I finally identified it as cravings. 

Personally, I crave both salty and sweet foods.

I felt like I was always taking 1 step forward and 2 steps back.

I would have good days but then I would have these days where my day was hard or my schedule was thrown off and I would come home and really be craving something sweet.

I would think eating that sweet thing would curb my craving but really it just made me want to keep eating sweet things the rest of the evening!

Turns out, it wasn’t my fault.

A lot of our sweet and salty foods tend to be processed or packaged foods and sometimes those types of foods have chemicals or substances in them that act on receptors in our brains and our addiction centers. Instead of quenching that craving and making it go away, it only makes us want more of it.

Throughout my own journey of weight loss and getting healthy, I really wanted to tap into why I was always having these cravings and how I could manage them better.

I really thought it was holding my back from achieving my goals.

I dug in and really started to work on my mindset and my own transformation with food.

Once I resolved some of those emotional eating issues, I noticed that it was easier for me to manage those cravings but they didn’t totally go away.

I knew something else had to be going on.

That’s when I discovered Functional Medicine.

As a physician assistant, I’m used to treating people for symptoms and conditions that they may have and putting a bandaid on those symptoms to just make them feel better.

A lot of times, we don’t dig down into why people are feeling that way. 

How can I manage that? How can I find what’s going on and what’s causing the way that they’re feeling?

With Functional Medicine, I learned that we actually DO dig down into that why and look into what’s causing the symptoms and conditions.

Then we tackle the root cause and work on it.
